Is Henry James a typical victorian author? (according to you)?
It’s not for school. It’s just that I’m quite curious after reading “The portrait of a lady”.
In my opinion he’s definitely not victorian if we take into accounts how he talks about society.
What do you think about it?
No, James is a modernist. Victorian novels (Think Jane Austen and Dickens) were very concerned about morality and society, and were often didactic- meaning that the author makes moral judgements about the characters and their actions. They also show a sense of certainty and objectivity, and a strong element of realism.
James’ works are in almost direct opposite to this- he makes no judgements about Daisy Miller’s behaviour, and is in fact quite critical of society; he exposes the American travellers in Europe as philistines.
‘The Turn of the Screw’ rejects the objective narration of the Victorian novel- The reader is never quite sure whether the nanny has actually seen the ghosts or not, and we are left in the dark about the actual order and reality of events. Surrealism and subjectivity are most obvious here.
