American Staffordshire Terrier = pit bull terrier?
I have a dog breed book saying “Known also as the pit bull terrier, this heavily boned fighting dog was created in the nineteenth century. Though obedient to its master, this dog is always willing to fight, making him also suitable as a fighting dog.”
Then it goes onto saying “It was first recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1898 as the American Pit Bull Terrier… In 1936 it was also recognized by the American Kennel Club as the Stafford terrier, and later in 1972 was officially renamed as the American Staffordshire terrier to distinguished him from the lighter-weight English Staffordshire bull terrier”.
Why does one dog have so many names, if this is true?
The book is by Tetsu Yamazaki and was published in usa in 1995.
PS I don’t believe all pitties are bad.
Am Staff’s and APBT’s were the same bred but over the years became there own. They are not APBT’s nor should they be call Pit Bull’s because there not.
Am Staff’s was generally the “show” version of APBT’s but they are seperate breeds.
